DESIGN RESEARCHER
Grassroots Designfest: UX Research for A Revolutionary Summer
Role: Lead UX Researcher
Project Overview
During the Grassroots Designfest, I volunteered as a UX researcher for A Revolutionary Summer, a nonprofit focused on dismantling harmful narratives about Black girls. My goal was to evaluate and improve the website’s usability to enhance engagement, accessibility, and donations.
Hypothesis
-
The website was cluttered, making navigation difficult for the target audience.
-
Heavy walls of unformatted text made it difficult to understand the organization’s mission.
-
Hidden donation links contributed to lower donor engagement and sponsorships.
Research Methods
Over 7 days, I conducted 10+ interviews (20-45 minutes each) with three key user groups:
-
Families (Black girls aged 12-17 and their parents/guardians)
-
Donors & Patrons
Each interview included:
-
Usability tasks to observe navigation behaviors.
-
Task analysis to assess engagement drop-off points.
-
Exit surveys to gather direct feedback on pain points.

Key Insights & Takeaways
✅ For Black Girls (Ages 12-17):
-
Wanted to see themselves represented visually on the website.
-
Primarily accessed content via mobile, not desktop—mobile optimization was critical.
✅ For Parents/Guardians:
-
Overwhelmed by dense text, making it difficult to progress through the site.
-
Needed a clearer path to key information (e.g., programs, applications, contact).
✅ For Donors & Patrons:
-
Found donation links difficult to locate, reducing trust and engagement.
-
Required a frictionless, error-free donation process.
Impact & Outcomes
-
Research validated the design team’s initial assumptions while uncovering additional donor pain points.
-
Findings informed mobile-first design recommendations, improved content hierarchy, and a simplified donation flow.
-
Contributed to an enhanced user experience that better reflected the mission and needs of A Revolutionary Summer.
